We have all heard how important it is to maintain a healthy diet and to exercise regularly to achieve an overall healthier lifestyle, but many of us have no idea why.  Of course monitoring calories, carbohydrates, and so on can help maintain a healthy weight as well as help those who are trying to lose weight achieve their weight loss goals, but there are many benefits than that.

For starters, when a person actively attempts to diet and exercise regularly, they tend to be conscious about what they eat a  s well as the activities that they participate in.  For example, the person who may have gone out with friends for happy hour a few times a week will most likely indulge in a few alcoholic beverages and an appetizer or two to tide them over.  The problem with this is that alcohol has many empty calories and chances are the appetizer will not be on the healthy side either.  That being said, a person with an active diet and exercise regimen will not necessarily skip the alcohol completely, but they may limit their intake to just one drink that has fewer calories than most like a light beer or a rum and diet coke.

Another way having a healthy lifestyle can change a person’s life has less to do with the person that is living the lifestlye but rather the people that are influenced by it.  Studies have shown that children often follow their parents when it comes to the things that they eat. So, when parents make it a point to ensure that their children lead a balanced diet, those habits will carry on for their lifetime.

Healthy Living: Hobbies That Can Help Keep You Healthy

We all realize that in order to be healthy, we need to do physical exercise of some sort. Something that is often times overlooked though, is the emotional aspect of living healthy. Staying as stress free as possible can be one of the best emotional exercises ever. In order to do this, we sometimes  need to back away from the problems that are causing the stress, and learn to put our energy into something more positive, like an enjoyable hobby.
Healthy hobbies can include the types that are also forms of physical exercise, such as yoga. Yoga is said to lift emotional stress, lower blood pressure and also gently stretch the muscles of the body. Yoga is one of the most popular types of stress relief hobbies, enjoyed by thousands daily. Before doing any type of new exercise program, it is always wise to consult with your physician first.

If your talents lie in the areas of art, you can take up sketching or painting. These types of activities are said to lower the blood pressure, while helping stress levels drop significantly. Producing something with your hands is also a great way to lower stress. Molding pottery or growing a small vegetable garden are two ideas. By being outdoors, you will absorb Vitamin D, which is not only good for you physically, but also mentally. Other more physical types of hobbies include learning different styles of dance. This is a good form of physical exercise, emotional relief and also a good way to make new acquaintances.

Living Healthy: Exercise and Good Health

For some of us, the word “exercise” instantly brings up thoughts of perspiration and muscle agony. If you would like to start living a healthier lifestyle, learning to exercise doesn’t have to be a torturous experience. The key to success when beginning a new exercise program is to keep things simple and easy, so you don’t overwhelm yourself and give up.
The first thing to do before beginning any new exercise program is to make a quick trip to your physician to make sure you are healthy enough to do the type of program you are most interested in. Most times there are no problems, but it’s best to get a physical first, just to be on the safe side.
One great way to exercise without overly exerting yourself is to start taking a walk. Even a walk around the block can be a great way to get your heart muscle strengthened, along with your leg and calf muscles. Begin slowly. Exercise should be enjoyable, so don’t look at your daily walks as if you are running a race. Enjoy the scenery. If you have a dog, take he or she with you for company. Start out with short distances. Before you know it, you may be walking further without even realizing it. It’s a great way to get Vitamin D from the sunshine, a healthy dose of fresh air, and you may even meet others that are beginning to lead a healthier lifestyle by walking.

If walking is out of the question, there are usually gyms near most neighborhoods. Depending on your budget, you may even be able to hire a trainer to help you know which exercises will benefit you the most.

Tips for Living Healthy: Changing Your Eating Habits

Nearly everyone would like to live a healthier lifestyle, but it can be hard to break old habits and make drastic lifestyle changes overnight. The key to becoming healthier is to take small positive steps without overwhelming yourself. As time goes on, you will more then likely be able to add more changes that result in a healthier you.

Most of us think of our eating habits when we think of unhealthy areas in our life. The foods we eat do play a massive role in how healthy or unhealthy we are, but having a craving for certain foods may not be a habit that can be broken easily. The key to success when trying to change eating habits is to begin slowly. Don’t try to completely stop eating all of your favorite foods in one day, or even one week. Make small changes that won’t be as noticeable. One tip is to lower your salt intake or change to using sea salt. This can help lower your blood pressure.

Consuming fast foods has become a nationwide problem. These foods are so over processed that they rarely include any vitamins or minerals. If you frequently eat fast foods, try to lessen the number of trips you make to the nearest drive-thru. If you eat oatmeal for breakfast, but you like the pre-sweetened kind, try making cooking old fashioned oats and using organic brown sugar instead. Try eating whole wheat or whole grain breads with your lunch. In this way you will get some much needed fiber into your diet. These are just a few of the helpful hints available for changing your eating habits and becoming healthier.

What is Lupus? Signs and Symptoms of Lupus.

Lupus is a disease that affects the body’s immune system, along with affecting the skin, the joints, the blood and often times the kidneys. Because it is an autoimmune disease, it causes the body to attack itself, including tissue and cells. Damage to organs is not unheard of with those affected by Lupus.  Each case is treated in a different manner, due to the fact that some individuals have very slight symptoms, while others suffer greatly.

Of the four different varieties of lupus, the one known as discoid lupus is in general, the one that affects the skin most often. This type of lupus generally appears as a rash that is present on the neck, face and/or scalp. Many patients that have this type of lupus may also suffer from ulcers that develop in the nose or mouth. Sensitivity to light can also be present.

A second type of lupus is commonly referred to as drug induced lupus. This type is caused when the patient has been taking a particular medication, two of which are procainamide and hydralazine. This type of lupus is rare, with only a small number of people suffering from or being diagnosed with it. Thankfully, most patients stop having symptoms shortly after the medication is stopped.

Systemic lupus is one of the more dangerous types of lupus. It tends to affect the blood, the nervous system, the kidneys, the lungs and heart. It may also affect the joints. Systemic lupus affects each individual in different ways. Some may have a flare of the disease, then be in remission for quite some time. Others may have ongoing problems.

The rarest form of lupus is referred to as neonatal lupus, which mainly affects newborn babies that are born to mothers that have systematic lupus. In the worse case scenario, the infant may be born with a heart or liver defect.

Participating in Medical Research, The Pros and Cons

If you suffer from a disease or condition, you may be asked to volunteer to be included in a medical research study for new medications or procedures. Deciding to participate in a study is not something that should be taken lightly. There are a variety of questions that should be asked beforehand, along with doing your own research before applying to be a candidate in a research study.
Many patients that volunteer for these types of research studies have a disease or condition that has not been eliminated by the normally prescribed medications for that specific disease. They become desperate to find a medication that will allow them to live a normal lifestyle and help them feel better. Many times it pays off, yet other times they are in the group that is chosen to receive a placebo drug instead, and will not have any positive or negative effects from the study trials.
Most studies give half of the volunteers the actual  medication that the research is being done on, and the other half of the group receives a placebo drug. After the required amount of time, both groups are asked to list any side effects they felt they had because of the new medication. Most times the volunteers are not told whether they received the medication or a placebo until after the study is finished. Data is collected and the outcome of both groups is entered in the research information.
Helping others that suffer from the same condition or disease is another reason many people will agree to participate in a new drug research study. The need to be part of a team that is trying to find a new drug that will eliminate the side effects of the disease prompt many to volunteer.
The decision to participate in a research study should be thought out and not made in a hasty way. Volunteers are allowed to ask questions, so don’t be afraid to ask if you have concerns about the side effects or risks that you may encounter.

Gene Therapy

The human genome has largely been unknown until the recent decade. Now human genes have been better identified. This has opened opportunities for further genetic study. Medical experts hope to use this new-found knowledge of genes to improve health medicine.

One such experimental method is referred to as gene therapy. This is a procedure in which genetic material is inserted in to a particular cell to alter the genetic code of that cell. This would greatly influence disease prevention and potentially cure particular health issues.

How is the genetic material introduced in to a cell? The genetic material must be housed and delivered in a carrier which is more commonly known as a vector. The most common vector used in experiments at the present time is the virus. Obviously, the viruses are altered to make them safer for the human and to produce the best health results. In experiments though, there still have been some side effects.

Currently gene therapy is still in the experimental stages and undergoing clinical trial. Approval from several authoritative and established sources, such as the United States Food and Drug Administration must be confirmed before proceeding with this procedure. Although gene therapy is still in the initial stages, it has the potential to improve the health of those fighting disease as well as prevent disease in those who may have inherited traits that make them more prone to particular types of diseases. Medical experts will have the ability to alter or completely replace genes and thus genetic code to manipulate and improve human health.

Although there are some ethical and legal issues associated with such medical procedures, these can be resolved as the results of gene therapy and its implications are better known. Studying the human genome and gene therapy, even with its possible adverse consequences, is definitely worth experts’ exploration and best efforts since its results can better human health and medicine.

Human Genome Sciences creating breakthrough Medicines

The human genome science which has now turn out to be a specialized field of research in the medical studies received its first major boost by the human genome project of the US government in 2003. The discovery of the genetic map of the human body has led to the creation of medicines not thought possible only a decade ago. These health medicines have their genesis in the accurate information regarding the genetic code of the human body. The human genome gives us the power to understand the genetic component of a disease in the human body and thereby enables us to give accurate diagnosis and treatment through intervention. These health medicines are break through in their nature primarily because of the orientation of the chemical composition which is designed to suit the body and address the exact genetic component of the disease giving an effective and fast treatment. Health medicines using the human genome can also be administered to commence treatment of future diseases that can also predicted by the study of human genome. This early intervention and anticipative treatment will mean that diseases can now be controlled in the early stages itself and the efficiency of the therapy will be greater than before. The conventional medicines are generic in the sense that they do not cater specifically to a single human body and can therefore be the cause of many unwanted side effects since some bodies react differently to the medicines. This will be a thing of the past with the new age health medicine. These medicines will be targeted for a specific human body taking into account the possible reaction of the body to those chemicals. Health medicines developed after the study of the human genome can be extremely useful in psychological treatment therapies to correct behavioral disorders.

Human genome Project and Health Medicines

The Human Genome Project of the US Department of Energy and the National Institute of Health has opened up the new scientific field called health medicines which had not been imagined a decade before. The significance of this project lies in the fact it has been able to map the genetic structure of the human body which a combination of 3 billion different orders of DNA and its constituents, the chromosomes and genes. This human genome database which has been created helps us to today look at the future with the hope of finding cure to all those diseases we called genetic or rather hereditary and even behavioral disorders that were generally considered incurable till now. With the better understanding of the DNA composition and ceding we can now diagnose and treat diseases much more efficiently than ever before. The human genome additionally gives us the power to predict future diseases in a body as per the indications of the genetic characteristics. This will benefit us by making early treatment possible with more accurate health medicines that are custom crafted for a particular genome and made oriented to the specific disease being addressed. The side effect of the usage of health medicines can also be accurately predicted to alter the chemical composition suitably. That means the health medicines based on the human genome model will have much higher chances of successful treatment than conventional medicines. Health medicines will now be an integral part of any therapy aimed at behavioral disorders like addiction or phobias. Since genetic component of the disease can now be correctly identified the health medicines can accordingly be created to target the specific element for an early and effective cure. Thus human genome study and new age health medicines are the way of the future in medical science.

Human Genome and its implications

Understanding the genetic composition of the human body has been one of the most challenging areas of scientific studies of the twentieth century. The human genome is made up of DNA which has four basic building blocks that can be arranged in 3 billion ways to create the order that defines the genetic nature of that individual. In 1990 the US government in collaboration with some other nations launched one of the most ambitious medical research projects in history with an astounding budget to fund that study. Though many people were not convinced about the worth of the human genome project by the end of the study after thirteen years the results took the whole world of medicine by surprise. The most important outcome of the study was the creation of the genetic map of the human body which determines the vary nature of the particular human. Once this map was ready using the information from DNA analysis of that human genome a complete guide to that body in terms of possible diseases and reaction of medicines to the body could be predicted. Thus treatment of future disease could commence before the disease itself using a whole new generation of customized medicines called the health medicines which were person and disease specific. Health medicines not only promise early cure but also guarantee that the chemical side effects of the medicines is analyzed before the administration. Health medicines are now being applied to more complex fields like behavioral therapy against addictions by having a detailed genetic report before commencement of the treatment. Thus the human genome study has proved to be a revolutionary stage in the development of advanced and customized heath medicines. This development allows us to identify the genetic component of the disease and make the health medicines accordingly.
